Ntenje Katota - Tour team 2007

"Dance4Life means a lot to me.  It has become part of my life and has given me the energy and skill to continue to raise awareness not only in my community but also out side my community it has given me a platform to speak on behalf of the voiceless children that are affected by HIV, it is sad that not much is been done when it come to access to better treatment but dance4life has given me the hope and strength to go on raising awareness and campaign and that some day hope is coming for people living with HIV in the world and especially Africa. It is a long road but it will be silly if we decide to give up we might not know how close we are. Lets continue the journey.

Simon Porter - Tour team 2006

"Being a member of the dance4life tour team was an exciting and inspiring experience. It opened my eyes about a lot of things surrounding the HIV pandemic, both here in the UK and on a worldwide scale. Most of all, my involvement with D4L confirmed my faith in the unifying power of music and dance, and reinforced my belief that young people can be a genuine force for change within the world today. "Being part of the UK Dance4Life event was a fantastic opportunity - seeing young people dancing across the globe for HIV / AIDS was really something special and I was proud to have taken part. Nowadays, you just can't talk enough about the importance of safer sex - remember you've gotta strap it up before you slap it up." - Tim Westwood, Radio One DJ and D4L UK ambassador

Schools Sexual and Reproductive Health

Sexual and Reproductive Health

One of the focal points of the Dance4Life Schools Project is raising awareness for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.

Sexual and reproductive health means...
• that young people are able to have satisfying and safe sex lives, in keeping with social and personal ethics
• protection from sexually transmitted infections and other reproductive health conditions or illnesses
• that young people are free of fear, violence, discrimination, shame and other factors which negatively affect sexual relationships.

To protect young people’s sexual and reproductive health, we need…
• Family planning education, counselling and services
• Education and services for mother-and-child healthcare
• Prevention and management of abortion complications
• Treatment of reproductive health conditions and infections
• Prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV and AIDS
• Information, education and counselling on human sexuality and responsible parenthood.

The Dance4Life Schools Project raises awareness for these topics, providing sound information and involving the youth of today in the world-wide struggle against HIV/AIDS.

Linked to sexual and reproductive health are young people's sexual and reproductive rights. The idea is basically that sexual and reproductive health is impossible if sexual and reproductive rights are not respected and fulfilled.

Sexual and reproductive rights mean that everyone has the right to…
• the best possible standard of sexual health, including access to sexual and reproductive health care services, contraceptives and medication
• seek, receive and share information related to sexuality, contraceptives, STIs, HIV and AIDS etc.
• respect for bodily integrity
• choose their partner
• decide to be sexually active or not
• consensual marriage
• decide if and when to have children
• pursue a satisfying, safe and pleasurable sexual life.

Dance4Life advocates these rights, while stressing that the responsible exercise of human rights requires that everyone respects the rights of others.
