Matthew Cavan’s Positive Story for dance4life UK

Matt Cavan, from Northern Ireland, discovered he was HIV positive in 2009 after going for a routine sexual health check. Since then he has become a spokesperson for dance4life, sharing his story with other young people and standing up to become an active role model in the HIV positive community.

Over 33.3 million are living with HIV worldwide.

Almost 30 million people have died of AIDS-related causes since 1981.

50% of people diagnosed with HIV in the UK in 2009 were diagnosed late, after they should have already started treatment.

In 2009, there were 2.6 million new infections.

Every 12 seconds a new person is infected with HIV.

91,500 people have HIV in the UK - 1/4 are completely unaware.

Of the 7,100 people newly infected with HIV every day, around half are under 25 years old.

Every minute worldwide between 2 and 3 young people are infected with HIV. Most of them don't survive beyond the age of 35.

Every 17 seconds, someone dies from an AIDS related illness.
