Taboo and Openess

 Taboo

For hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, AIDS effectively doesn’t exist. They dont talk about it, they don't read about it, they continue to behave as though the disease isn't a reality.

Nonetheless, 33.2 million people in the world are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. For them it is very much a reality.

Most people with HIV/AIDS live in countries where both the infection itself and sex - one of the main ways in which the virus is transmitted - are surrounded by a taboo of silence. This makes it extremely difficult to inform and educate people, not only about the way the HIV virus can be contracted, but also on how it can be prevented.

Openness

Daring to admit you are living with HIV is not easy. People living with HIV are often ashamed and can end up deeply isolated.

Only when the taboo has been lifted, people will be able to support and advise each other and help avoid further spreading of the infection. A society affected by AIDS can itself contribute substantially to the fight against the disease.
